Ok I completely realize that I had said I would start giving reviews of games I buy and yet there have not been any such posts in a while. However…my blog my time. So after only 2 months of the game being out here are my thoughts on Modern Warfare 3.

The campaign followed the same basic formula that had been set in the first two MW games. You assume control of multiple characters that have different roles in the same global conflict. I will say that the first few hours of the campaign, while fast paced and very action filled, didn’t really contribute to the actual story too much. It was cool to fight through the New York Stock Exchange and then blow up a Russian sub in the harbor. But aside from providing some fun set pieces and close quarters firefights, the story wasn’t progressing. However, after a shaky start the campaign got its legs and once again was a home run. Awesome set pieces mixed in with frantic gun play without the twists that MW2 gave us. It felt really good to finally kill Makarov at the end after 3 games of chasing him. Now my one complaint…if you can call it that, has to do with a scene that was similar to MW2’s “No Russian” mission. In MW2 one mission has you assume control of a deep undercover CIA agent who is in Makarov’s circle. You go into an airport with Makarov and simply mow civilians down with a machinegun. Now this may sound to be put there in poor taste, but you have to look at it as a plot point. You help instigate the global war that carries over into MW3. And what’s more is that it gets you thinking, maybe there are people out in the world right now doing the same thing for the sake of our national security. It’s an emotionally powerful scene that I know I will remember for the rest of my life. In MW3 Infinity Ward tried to recreate that feeling but it felt somewhat forced. In between missions you end up taking on the role of a father video taping his wife and daughter on vacation in Paris. As you get to an intersection with the Eiffel Tower in the background a van pulls up behind the family and men jump out and run away. Right as the wife and daughter get next to the van it explodes and a green gas starts to spread throughout the street. Now I can respect that IW did this to set a mood, but it was almost like they were trying to top what they did in MW2 and it just wasn’t as polished. All in all, the campaign was pretty good. Just what we have come to expect from a MW game and IW.

Special ops returned again in lieu of a co-op campaign. You can team up with a partner to complete a series of missions that are not featured in the campaign. They offer a fun break from regular multiplayer. There were some new additions and tweaks to the mode as well. Now you rank up and unlock weapons and attachments in Spec Ops separately from multiplayer. Why would you want to unlock weapons you ask? For the new Spec Ops mode called Survival. It is basically a revamped Zombies or Horde mode. You and your partner are tasked with surviving an unlimited number of rounds of enemies that are all fully equipped with weapons. As you complete rounds you will earn money to purchase better weapons, air support, and other equipment. This mode is extremely fun even with just one player.

The big selling point as always is the multiplayer component. At first glance one could be forgiven for thinking this was an expansion pack for MW2. The overall look of the game, from colors to graphics, down to gun details look basically the same. Sure there are some new guns, but a lot of familiar guns return. The only real difference with weapons is that now shotguns are a primary weapon and not a secondary. Meaning you will have to use a perk slot to carry a shotgun with your assault rifle. While it was nice to have that option when entering a building, it did get quite over powered in MW2 so its nice to see this change. There are some other changes that seem to be pretty good. A few perks have been scrapped: Stopping Power, Last Stand, Danger Close, One Man Army, and Commando. Also, the Cold Blooded Perk has been split into two perks that are in different slots. There was a lot of buzz generated by IW saying that Last Stand had been taken out of the game because it was easily the most frustrating perk to play against. So when they said it was gone there was much rejoicing…only to be taken back once you realize that it is still in the game…just as a death streak only. Now, if you die 4 times without getting a kill, you can choose to use final stand. It is still quite annoying to have a kill streak stopped by some loser in final stand, but if someone needs that to make sure that they get at least one kill in a round more power to them. You won’t be seeing it as much as you did in MW2 or even BO. The best change to the game involved the kill streak system. Now it is a point based system, and you earn a point for each kill as always, but also for completing objectives and for every two assists using Hardline. It’s a great change that now gives players that don’t always get huge kill counts a chance to earn good kill streaks. The other big change is called Strike Packages. You have three options to choose from: Assault, Support, and Specialist. Assualt works just like you’re used to. When your points build up you get killstreaks that you can use to blow up the other team. You get predator missiles, attack helicopters, ac-130s and other stuff. These rewards stack like they used to as well, meaning that if you have 5 kills, get 2 more with a predator missile, your streak is at 7 and you will get an attack helicopter. The support package is great for players who prefer to help the team as a whole rather than get individual stats up. The rewards in this package are meant to help the team rather than get kills. You get UAV’s, CUAV’s, EMPs, and other things that provide the whole team with help. The nice thing about this package is that your point streak doesn’t reset when you die. Since you are helping the team you won’t be penalized for a few deaths. This allows you to shoot for the highest kill streaks without fear of not getting them. Finally, there is the specialist package. Rather than unlocking kill streaks as you get points, you will unlock perks. Every two kills you can assign a perk you want to unlock. And after 8 points without dying, you will unlock every perk in the game, basically making you a super soldier. However, once you die the streak resets so you have to be careful. After those big things, there are smaller tweaks that add to up to make the whole game better. You can now choose which kill streak to use if you have multiple unlocked, and it shows you how close you are to your next one. Also, the spawn logic is greatly improved. You won’t spawn into an airstrike anymore, and spawning in front of the enemy is less frequent. All of the changes make the game much more balanced and in the end better than MW2.

So as a whole, the game is good. It’s not the great leap forward that MW2 was and the Multiplayer didn’t introduce a lot of innovations like BO did, but the subtle changes to the kill streak system and gameplay makes the experience as a whole better. The controls are still water tight and you always feel like you if you can react first you will come out on top. So before you cast MW3 out as just another iteration of CoD give it a chance. If you like MW2 you’ll love MW3.

One of the most VILE and DISGUSTING “fashion” trends this season are foxtails / fur tails. Yes, there are fake fur tails, but the majority of fur tails are made of real fur.

That’s right, animals lost their lives for a keychain that you can hang off your purse or clip to your belt. One of the biggest retailers for foxtails is Dolls Kill, who’s name seems oddly appropriate given the amount of animals that died for their product.
